Global Tariff Database (Beta Version v_beta1-2024-12)

The Global Tariff Database (GTD) provides bilateral statutory tariff rates for 200 importers and their partners, spanning 34 years (1988–2021). It includes both MFN and preferential tariffs and is based on HS6-level tariff rates (HS88/92 Nomenclature), covering over 6.9 billion observations.

The GTD does not include tariff types beyond MFN and preferential tariffs, such as safeguards, anti-dumping tariffs, or those related to the US trade war.

Find details about the available variables in the GTD and the reference data in the dictionary below. The accompanying paper and its Online Appendix C provide a detailed description of the algorithm.

Pair-level and sector-level tariff data are available in .dta and .csv formats, including both simple averages and current-year trade-weighted averages.

Access to HS6-Level Microdata

The detailed microdata at the HS6-level are currently not publicly available. Access is restricted to a small test group of experienced researchers during this beta phase. If you would like to be considered, please send me an email and include a completed copy of this Excel sheet outlining your project details.

Please note that access is not guaranteed. Priority is given to users who can provide constructive feedback and help improve the dataset for future public releases.

This is a Beta Version. Please contact me if you find any mistakes, so I can improve the algorithm.

Global Tariff Database: U.S. Trade War Extension (Version v_2025-10)

Overview

The Global Tariff Database: U.S. Trade War Extension (GTD—U.S. Trade War) provides daily, product-level data on U.S. import and export tariffs vis-à-vis all trading partners from January 2018 through August 15, 2025. This extension builds on the Global Tariff Database (v beta1-2024-12), incorporating all tariff measures imposed by the United States and applied to U.S. exports abroad during the 2018–2025 trade wars, consolidated into a single dataset. For an extensive description of the construction of the GTD—U.S. Trade War, please refer to the accompanying paper and its Online Appendix A. The data will be updated periodically to include new tariff measures as they are announced and implemented, although typically with some lag.

Tariff data are available at both the national tariff-line and harmonized HS6 (HS 2017) levels in .dta and .csv formats.
